Today in class we just had a catch up day which we took notes, finished our blog, or finished labeling our maps. So I did the last two things for my map which was the International Date Line and the Prime Meridian. Then I started on my math homework after I went to the bathroom. Mr. Shick called me up in the middle of the class to tell me that I missed a blog from last week and wondered how I remember to do the blog, so I told him that I write it down. He also asked me how I liked the class so far and said that I like it.

Today in class we labeled three maps called the Mercator Projection, Peters Projection, and Robinsons Projection. for each of them, we had to label all the continents and all of the oceans, plus we had to label were the Tropic of Cancer, Tropic of Capricorn, and where the Equator was. For the first 20 minutes of class, we didn't do anything but talk and carry on since the teacher wasn't their. That is what we did in class today.

In the video, the cartographers described how the Mercator has many distortions in each of countries and continents. for example, Africa and Greenland were both the same size even though Africa is 14 times bigger than Greenland. Europe was drawn bigger than south America even though it is 3.8 million square miles to south America's 6.9 million square miles. peters projection shows much less distortion because it has the right sizes and locations for the different countries. this is valid because the Europeans enlarged areas at the poles to make straight lines of geographic direction which makes it easier to travel across an ocean.

today in class, we took notes on different maps and map scales. we learned how the one map has a bunch of distortions because like each of the countries were bigger or smaller than what they are supposed to be. alaska was a lot bigger than texas even though they are both pretty the same size. africa and greenland were the same size even though africa is 14 times bigger and europe was a lot smaller than what it is supposed to be. the newer map, peters world map was a lot more stretched out which made it so much more accurate and the countries were not as distorted.

      Today in class, we took a test on the notes we took the previous week. I think that I did pretty good on the test because most of the questions, I new the answer to but a couple I had trouble on. I wish that I knew the answer to the bonus question because then I would have got to extra points. On the test there was multiple choice questions, fill in the blank questions, and an essay on socrates which there were two that we had to choose from.

Today in class we finished taking notes on Socrates and then we discussed the test that we are going to have on Munday. On the test, we must write an essay about the notes we took on excellence. When we finished talking about that, we went off topic and started a big conversation and for the last ten minutes, we did a blog on what we did in class.

Socrates

As a young man, Socrates worked as a stone mason and he fought heroically in the Peloponnesion War. Later he was charged with two crimes which was corruption of Athens youth and for not believing in the gods of the state. In defense he said, it is my duty to gadfly to the lazy sluggish Athens. A jury of 500 male citizens found him guilty, and (279-221) sentenced to death by drinking hemlock. He did have the opportunity to escape but he refused he wanted to prove his loyalty to Athenian Democracy.

Excellence

The essay, Massage to Garcia was published as an inspirational essay in March 1899 describing how people don’t always do the job when they think it is too hard. This essay sold 14 million copies and translated into 37 different languages. Due to its popularity, it was reprinted as a pamphlet. This essay was also made into a movie twice in 1916, and 1936. the writer of the essay, Message to Garcia, was named as Rowan who was an army officer and had the tallest mountain in North America renamed after him.

I thought that the passage, A Message to Garcia was very inspiring to me. It shows that not everyone does their work even though they should and this guy delivering the message any way even though it was almost impossible. It really shows that even though it is hard, you should still do it because you’re supposed to. This can really inspire you to do a lot more and actually finish it instead of blowing it off and just not doing it. This essay tells you that when you don’t study or do something you said you would do, you can’t say that your boss or teacher doesn’t like you since they gave you no credit. This message relates to me because even when something gets to be really hard, I still get it done and I don’t just say that I am going to do something and then never do it because I just don’t want to.

My Experience at Jc

My first few days at John Carol went well because I met a lot of new people. The people that I made friends with are very nice and helped me out when I needed it. The upper classmen students also seemed nice because some of them would say hi to me in the hallway. I thought the teachers were nice too because they will help you if you don’t understand something and they were very fun. I think that the off mods are very convenient since it gives you time to yourself which allows you to get homework done. Being able to do homework during school is helpful if you have sports or clubs because it gets rid of what you have for when you get home.  So overall, I thought that my first few days at John Carol were awesome.
